Perkins Injection Pump Types
Depending on the engine generation, Perkins diesel engines may use different fuel injection technologies.
Mechanical Diesel Injection Pumps
Older Perkins engines commonly use mechanical fuel-injection systems. These systems require accurate fuel metering and injection timing.
Inline Injection Pumps
Inline pumps use individual pumping elements associated with the engine cylinders and are used in various heavy-duty diesel applications.
Rotary / Distributor Pumps
Rotary injection pumps provide fuel delivery through a compact pump assembly and are found on selected Perkins engine configurations.
Electronic Fuel Injection Systems
Later-generation engines can incorporate electronic fuel-management systems and electronically controlled fuel components.
High-Pressure Fuel Pumps
Modern diesel engines may use high-pressure fuel systems requiring precise matching of the pump, injectors, ECU and engine calibration.
The correct pump cannot be selected from the Perkins engine family alone.
Perkins Fuel Injection Pump Manufacturers & Brands
Depending on the engine and pump specification, Perkins fuel-system components may be associated with specialist diesel-injection manufacturers and OEM suppliers.
Perkins
Perkins is the primary engine manufacturer and offers genuine replacement fuel injection components for its engines. Genuine Perkins components are designed and tested for specific engine applications.
Bosch
Bosch is a major diesel fuel-injection technology manufacturer and supplies various diesel injection systems and components used across industrial and heavy-equipment applications.
Delphi
Delphi diesel fuel-injection systems are used in a range of diesel engine applications.
Stanadyne
Stanadyne is known for mechanical and electronic diesel fuel-injection systems used in agricultural, construction and industrial applications.
Zexel
Zexel diesel injection equipment is found across numerous Japanese and industrial diesel applications.
Denso
Denso manufactures diesel fuel-injection technologies, including high-pressure fuel-system components.
Important: The pump manufacturer should be confirmed from the identification plate or part number rather than assumed from the engine brand.
Perkins Fuel Injection Pump Part Numbers
The correct part number is one of the most important pieces of information when buying a Perkins fuel injection pump.
For example, Perkins lists 2643C623 as a 1000 Series fuel pump associated with the Perkins 1004-4 engine. Perkins also provides an engine-serial-number compatibility check for this component.
When requesting a quotation, provide:
- Perkins pump part number
- Engine model
- Engine serial number
- Machine model
- Machine serial number
- Existing pump number
- Pump manufacturer
- Clear pump photographs
- Quantity required
How to Identify the Correct Perkins Injection Pump
1. Check the Engine Model
Start with the complete engine model.
For example:
Perkins 1104D-44T
is more useful than simply stating:
Perkins 1100
2. Record the Engine Serial Number
The engine serial number can be critical because the same engine family may have different fuel-system configurations.
3. Check the Existing Pump
Look for identification information stamped or attached to the pump.
4. Record the Complete Part Number
Take a clear photograph of the pump identification plate if the number is difficult to read.
5. Provide Machine Information
Where possible, provide:
Machine Make → Machine Model → Engine Model → Engine Serial Number → Pump Number
This gives us substantially more information for sourcing and cross-checking.
Symptoms of a Faulty Perkins Fuel Injection Pump
A worn or damaged injection pump may contribute to:
- Difficult starting
- Hard cold starting
- Loss of engine power
- Poor acceleration
- Excessive exhaust smoke
- Irregular engine operation
- Poor fuel economy
- Engine misfire
- Fuel leakage
- Unstable idle
- Reduced performance under load
However, these symptoms do not automatically mean the injection pump is defective.
Similar symptoms can be caused by:
- Blocked fuel filters
- Contaminated diesel
- Water in fuel
- Air entering the fuel system
- Faulty injectors
- Damaged fuel lines
- Incorrect injection timing
- Low compression
- Faulty sensors
- Electrical problems
- Fuel supply restrictions
A proper diagnosis should therefore be completed before replacing an expensive injection pump.
Tips When Buying a Perkins Diesel Fuel Injection Pump
Tip 1: Don’t Order From the Machine Model Alone
A machine may have different engine options depending on production year and configuration.
Always confirm the engine.
Tip 2: Send the Existing Pump Number
The number on the existing pump can significantly improve identification.
Tip 3: Provide the Engine Serial Number
This can help establish the correct engine build and compatible component.
Tip 4: Compare Mounting and Connections
Check:
- Mounting holes
- Drive arrangement
- Fuel connections
- Delivery outlets
- Electrical connections
- Pump dimensions
- Drive shaft configuration
Tip 5: Be Careful With Used Pumps
A used pump may have unknown operating hours, internal wear or contamination.
Ask whether it has been:
- Tested
- Inspected
- Calibrated
- Reconditioned
- Professionally rebuilt
Tip 6: Consider OEM and Quality Aftermarket Options
Depending on the application, customers may choose between genuine OEM, OEM-equivalent, aftermarket or professionally remanufactured options.
Tip 7: Check the Fuel System Before Installation
Contaminated fuel can damage a replacement pump.
Before fitting a new pump, inspect the fuel system and replace contaminated filters where necessary.
Genuine, OEM, Aftermarket & Reconditioned Perkins Pumps
Nkokhi Group can investigate different sourcing options depending on the application and budget.
Genuine Perkins
Genuine Perkins components are manufactured for specified Perkins engine applications.
OEM / OEM-Equivalent
OEM-equivalent options can provide an alternative where suitable for the application.
Aftermarket
Aftermarket pumps can provide cost-effective alternatives, subject to quality and compatibility.
Reconditioned / Remanufactured
A professionally remanufactured or reconditioned pump may be considered for selected older engines where new pumps are expensive or difficult to obtain.
Availability varies by model and part number.
